Teaching History Through Drama – Session Two – KS2

ABOUT THE COURSE

Drama for learning, can help children to engage with historical characters, situations, settings and events, in enjoyable and highly memorable ways. ‘Drama for Learning’ approaches can be used to enter and explore authentic historical images and texts together ‘in role’ and to engage with life in the past, whilst maintaining a ‘respect for evidence’.

SESSION 1 (KS1): This session will focus on The Great Fire of London. The approach and the drama strategy choices will be explained ‘step by step’ and the drama lesson will use paintings, diary entries, recounts and reconstructions.

SESSION 2 (KS2): This session will focus on Ancient Egypt’ The approach and the drama strategy choices will be explained ‘step by step’ in a drama lesson teaching about the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun. Historical images, photographs and recounts will be used. Teachers who have already attended the previous session (KS1) will be given the optional opportunity afterwards, to talk about any drama they have tried out between sessions.

COST:

One session: £25 for 1 teacher; £15 for each additional teacher (from the same school)

Two sessions: £40 for 1 teacher ; £30 for each additional teacher (from the same school)

Individual teachers may book places on this course, (which is hosted by National Drama).

COURSE LEADER

Patrice Baldwin was a primary headteacher, School Improvement and Art Education Adviser and Ofsted inspector. She was Sir Jim Rose’s Drama Editorial Expert for his proposed primary curriculum.

Patrice has given keynotes and led workshops in 35+ countries and was President of the International Drama Theatre and Education Association (2010-13) and Chair of National Drama for more than a decade (until 2015). She created and directed ‘Drama for Learning and Creativity’ (D4LC), an internationally acclaimed school improvement initiative.

Patrice is a published educational author and has been a BBC Education scriptwriter and series consultant (TV and Radio). She now works freelance.
