Towards a National Plan for Drama - NATIONAL DRAMA

Towards a National Plan for Drama

The DTEA has recently been working to create a National Plan for Drama and Theatre Education. It is not too late to include, amend or improve; the ’Plan’.

Towards a National Plan for Drama

  • Drama should be a discrete subject in all primary, secondary, SEND and alternative education settings with equal status to other arts subjects.
  • Every child and young person should experience a weekly practical drama experience taught by teachers with relevant training.
  • All children and young people should have access to co-curricular learning in terms of theatre visits, school plays, drama clubs and work with artists.
  • Every child and young person should experience live professional theatre on an annual basis.

These four statements are drawn from Towards a National Plan for Drama, which will be presented at The Music and Drama Expo on January 30 & 31.

As many of you will know National Drama has been an integral member of the Drama and Theatre Education Alliance (DTEA) since it was formed. The DTEA has recently been working to create a National Plan for Drama and Theatre Education. Steve Ball and Geoff Readman will be launching the draft plan at the Music and Drama Education Expo at the Business Design Centre in London on 31 January. The Expo is free to attend and you can register here.

It is not too late to include, amend or improve; the ’Plan’. The most recent draft is here and we would welcome and value your comments.
